printings of The Rumour
The Rumour 2001, white cube
In the autumn of 2001 white cube Hoxton Square in London exhibited a series of eight paintings by luc tuymans entitled The Rumour. in this page there are also images of prints that derived from these eight previous paintings. Actually, transforming panting into printing is a usual working method for himself.
By collecting and juxtaposing several images the content of the individual images can be reconsidered, as well as the psychological relations between the depicted subjects.During his youth tuymans has been taken on a holiday to historic Brittany, a Region in northwestern France famous for its many chateaus and fortified towns that date back to the twelfth century. During one of these trips , Tuymans became fascinated with the chateaus dovecotes, unusually large structures that housed pigeons for food or as sport hunting quarry. He was told at the time that pigeon keeping was a privilege restricted to the nobility and that the size of a dovecote corresponded to the size and prestige of the estate.

The Rumour, Oil on canvas
The subject matter for the painting series the Rumour was drawn from this history chosen to evoke the oppressive atmosphere of power and its abuse: a muddy image of pigeons on the street, birds eyes seen in extreme close-up, a birdcage; a faded portrait of an ageing aristocratwho is an authoritarian figure contrasts sharply with the other image, of a twisted body bending over forwards. The images of the three eyes were sourced from a pigeon breeding catalogue( in these catalogue, macro views of eyes are shown characterizing breed quality and race-readiness) the image source for thebend overpainting was found in a book of diagnostic views – the person depicted is standing in position for sclerosis examination.
Within, Oil on canvas
Installation
Within depicts a birdcage seen from the inside,in its original source painting, whose object carries sinister implications of imprisonment only emphasizes all the more the invisible control of social constructs like class, and this work is more like a nightmare in which certain entrapment looms in a dark void, its dark background looks bruised, and tuymans cut into the surface with the handle of his brush, leading to a unclear notion that which side of the cage we as a viewer exist on
the overall display of the Rumourencourages people to gain a psychological mingling through the collation of the eight images and the associations of each individual object.it also lead to discrepancies and multi-narratives in our thinking according to different personal experiences. The Rumour appears to refer to ghostly visions of oppression, and Tuymans presents these frightening ideas in ordinary and easily recognisable forms.
This exhibition leads to an idea of using images that is supposedly irrelevant to each other, but somehow their iconic signs work together to bring up a new narrative. Moreover It suggests that painters using a constantly progressive methodology is able to creat a sort of consistence in all of their works, this correspondence allows each of the painting to communicate with each other regardless of the time when they are produced.
